Function
Potassium chlorate was one key ingredient in early firearms percussion caps (primers). When mixed with a suitable fuel, it may form an explosive material, a so-called Sprengel explosive. Another application of potassium chlorate is as the oxidizer in a smoke composition such as used in, e.g., smoke grenades.
